“Square Biz” is a song by American pop/R&B/soul singer, Teena Marie. The song was released as a single in 1981 from the album It Must Be Magic. It would go on to become one of Marie’s signature songs.

The song interpolates a rap verse from the Sugarhill Gang’s 1979 hit “Rapper’s Delight”.

Cover versions and appearances in media
In 2002, a new version of this song, titled “Hollywood Square Biz”, was used as the theme to the popular game show Hollywood Squares from 2002 to 2004.[2]

In 2002, En Vogue performed a cover of the song on their concert DVD, Live in the USA.

Missy Elliott uses an interpolation of a verse from Square Biz in Ciara’s 2004 hit single, “1, 2 Step”.[3]

The Firm’s “Firm Biz” contains a sample based on the song featuring En Vogue’s Dawn Robinson from the group’s 1997 album The Album.

“Real Love” by Master P featuring Sera-Lynn, 2002

In January 2011, The Foreign Exchange performed a piece of the song during their Authenticity Tour in Europe.

The song managed to peak at #12 on Billboard’s Club Play Singles, while performing moderately on Billboard’s Pop Singles, peaking only at #50, becoming her second single to chart on the Pop Singles chart.

  1. Wow! I had the "pleasure to see Ms Teena"in concert with "Mr RICK JAMES"and THE STONE/CITY BAND"it was a "show to remember"weed was "flowing freely"and everyone was "Ball'n out of control! everything was "all good" thanks "Rick/James"and Ms Teena/Marie!

  2. She was the first singer to rap, and it was this song. All the soul artists had to figure out how to react to rap. They could not have anticipated the musical disaster that was to come, as mere rappers and DJs would push bands off the stage and airwaves. Well, here we are.

  3. The only Rock and Roll Hall of Fame oversight bigger than Teena’s exclusion is that of Rick James. She didn’t play an instrument in this performance, but she COULD have. She played as many instruments as Prince. FACT.

  4. Happy black history month teena🤷🏾‍♀️💕💪🏾it took me to be in my 20s to realize she was white. This women had soul😍we won’t never get anyone like this😌🤷🏾‍♀️😂and….she can dance 💪🏾🤷🏾‍♀️😂🤪

  6. This all we heard when my mom and sisters had their kickback back in the day… its amazing how the music we listened to then is what i wanna hear now

  7. This is lame… the label should've given us the actual audio from the LIVE SHOW that was performed on camera instead of dubbing the recording from 1981 — this is false advertising! Shame!

  8. As soon as she says everybody get up…i always start dancing lol..still to this day i recall seeing her for the 1st time back then and said mom wait that's a white girl singing this lol…of the BEST R&B songs EVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR…
